Gary Hamilton, P.Geo, CSAP

Mr. Hamilton is Contaminated Sites Specialist engaged in environmental studies throughout British Columbia, Yukon, and Southeast Alaska.  He has over 35 years of experience conducting senior review of hydrogeological and contaminant investigations, environmental impact assessment, and site remediation. 

Mr. Hamilton is primarily involved the investigation, design, and implementation of remediation measures for soil and groundwater contamination, including risk assessment approaches; assessment of physical and contaminant hydrogeology at waste disposal, industrial, and commercial sites; and remedial action programs. 

Since appointed in 2000, by the BC Ministry of Environment to the Roster of Approved Professionals, his responsibilities have included making recommendations to the Ministry regarding the issuance of instruments such as Determinations and Certificates of Compliance for industrial and commercial sites.

Lejac Residential School, Fraser Lake, BC

Provided senior technical support for the investigation of potential contamination at the former Lejac Residential School in support of a specific claim.

Contaminated Soil Management Flood Mitigation Program, Grand Forks, BC

Provided senior technical review of soil management plan for handling of potentially contaminated soil during the construction of flood mitigation structure.

Groundwater flow and transport numerical model review

Completed technical review of FEFLOW groundwater flow and transport model for a Drilling Waste Disposal Area and salt plume in support of a of a Human Health and Ecological Risk Assessment.

Whitehorse Upper Tank Farm, Whitehorse, Yukon     
Project Manager then Project Director, responsible for the historical review, environmental site assessment, development of risk-based remediation standards and confirmation of remediation for a former tank farm that in Whitehorse, Yukon that operated for over 50 years.  Work was conducted in compliance with an order from the National Energy Board and regulatory compliance was obtained in November 2009.  Responsible for the completion of an Environmental Impact Assessment of the proposed re-development work in support of a decision document from the Yukon Environmental and Socioeconomic Assessment Board.

Albert Creek Landfill, Watson Lake, Yukon   
Project Manager responsible for the groundwater monitoring at residential water supply wells and monitoring wells located near an active municipal solid waste landfill.

Lead-Zinc Ore Concentrate Spills, Southern Lakes, Yukon
Project Manager responsible for the environmental assessment and remediation of three historical lead-zinc concentrate spills associated with rail-car de-railments along the White Pass 7 Yukon Route Railroad in Yukon.  Concentrate was excavated and stabilized with concrete.

White Pass & Yukon Route Utah Yard, near Whitehorse, Yukon   
Project manager responsible for the environmental assessment and remediation of ore concentrate spills at a truck to rail transfer yard near Whitehorse, Yukon.  Contaminated soil was mixed with concrete and stabilized.

Yukon Pipelines Limited Abandonment (Alaska/BC Border to Whitehorse) Northern BC and Yukon
Project Manager responsible for the environmental assessment, human health and ecological risk assessment and remediation of selected hydrocarbon releases.  Remediation was conducted through enhances in situ bioremediation.  Work was conducted in accordance with and order from the National Energy Board and all of the conditions of the order were fulfilled.

British Yukon Railway Disposal Pit (Mile Post 49), Bennett Lake, BC  
Project Manager responsible for the environmental assessment and remediation of a disposal pit that was used to burn bunker oil from a de-railed tanker car and hazardous waste.  The extent of soil contamination was delineated, excavated then placed in a lined bio-cell with nutrients and ventilation added.

Railway Tie Treatment Facility, Carcross, Yukon          
As Project Manager, carried out environmental assessments and the developed a Plan of Restoration for soil, sediment, groundwater, and surface water contaminated with diesel, pentachlorophenol, and dioxin/furans.  The facility was used to treat railway ties with diesel-based pentachlorophenol.

Bulk Fuel Storage Facility, Dawson City, Yukon    
Evaluated the extent of hydrocarbon contamination of soil and groundwater at a bulk storage facility.  Developed and monitored the implementation of a remedial action plan to remove contaminated soil and monitor surface and groundwater quality.

Government of Yukon, Community Services, 20 locations across Yukon  
Project Manager responsible for the implementation of hydrogeological assessments of 20 solid waste landfills located across the Yukon.  The work included a review of historical site activates, site geology and hydrogeology, and the installation of a groundwater monitoring network and preparation of a hydrogeological assessment report for each of the landfill sites.

Teck Resources Limited, Sa Dena Hes Mine, Watson Lake, Yukon
Project Director responsible for the oversight and technical review of a detailed site investigation and remediation for the permanent closure of the Sa Dene Hes Mine located 75 km north of Watson Lake, Yukon.  Contaminates of concern included petroleum hydrocarbons and heavy metals.  Site is currently undergoing remediation to risk-based standards.
